At the "Night that creates knowledge" on 4 November 2023, all citizens and university members were invited to experience science at Leibniz University and also to become active themselves - and many took advantage of this opportunity. From young to old, they streamed through lecture theatres, seminar rooms, laboratories and research buildings. Scientists from all faculties showed what they are researching and teaching about and were available to answer questions in dialogue with visitors. The joint Institute for Advanced Studies for Ethics of the Sciences of the Universities of Hanover and Göttingen also introduced itself to the interested public.
The interdisciplinary research at the Institute for Advanced Studies for Ethics of the Sciences deals with questions of responsible science: scientific success can only contribute to a better society if science understands societal needs and limits and society understands scientific processes and products. In their lecture, Prof Dr Nils Hoppe and Prof Dr Silke Schicktanz provided impulses from the various disciplines involved, ethics and philosophy, as well as from a legal perspective. Using exciting examples, they spoke about the tension between transparency, explainability and trust, as these are necessary conditions for successful interaction between science and society.
The "Night that creates knowledge" at Leibniz University Hannover is part of the November of Science, a project of the Initiative Wissenschaft Hannover, in which the eight universities in Hannover, the Volkswagen Foundation, the Hannover Student Union, scientific institutions and the state capital Hannover are involved. It will take place from 1 to 19 November 2023 and will provide insights into Hannover as a university and science location at numerous events.
